An MP4 to transcript converter takes the audio track of an MP4 video and writes the speech in it as text, in paragraphs you can copy or download.

How it works

  1. 01

    Add your video

Drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or audio file on the box at the top of the page, or choose it from your computer. Files up to 3 hours work.

  2. 02

    Transcribe it

The first 5 minutes of up to 3 files a day are free. For the whole file, use minutes from a pack. The text appears paragraph by paragraph as it is transcribed.

  3. 03

    Check, copy or download

Play the file on the page and click a sentence to correct a word. Copy the text or download TXT, and DOCX, SRT or VTT with a pack. Timecodes stay off until you turn them on.

MP4 to text, in plain paragraphs

People search for this under several names: MP4 to text, MP4 to transcript, MP4 to text converter, convert MP4 to text. They all ask for the same thing, the spoken words of a video written down. This page gives you the words as plain paragraphs, with no timecodes unless you turn them on.

The example result on this page uses made-up meeting text. It shows the same paragraphs as plain text, with [HH:MM:SS] timecodes and as an SRT file.

A new paragraph starts where the speaker pauses or when a paragraph has grown long, so a recording reads like text instead of one block.

Where the video goes

The video is not uploaded. Your browser reads only the audio track from the file and cuts it into parts of about a minute. Each part goes to a speech recognition model (ElevenLabs’ Scribe v2, reached through fal.ai) that returns the text, and the browser puts the parts back in order. Because only audio travels, a large video file does not need to be sent anywhere before it can be transcribed.

Check and correct before you download

The text appears while the file is being transcribed. When it finishes, play the file on the page and read along: the paragraph being played is highlighted. Click any sentence to correct a word. Copy text and the downloads both include your corrections.

Plain text first, timecodes when you need them

The first result has no timecodes. To find a passage in the video later, turn on [HH:MM:SS] timecodes, which are free: each paragraph then starts with the time it begins. With a pack you can also use HH:MM:SS.mmm or HH:MM:SS:FF frames, a start timecode for a clip that does not begin at zero, and a timecode every 10, 15, 30 or 60 seconds. Changing these settings does not transcribe the file again.

SRT and VTT are subtitle files. Every subtitle has a start and an end time, so those downloads carry times whether or not the text view shows timecodes.

Long videos

Files up to 3 hours work: recorded meetings, lectures, interviews, screen recordings and downloaded videos. Stretches of silence are not sent for transcription and are not charged. A part that fails is retried, and if it still fails, its minutes are not charged.

Free, then pay once

The first 5 minutes of up to 3 files a day are free, with no account. Longer files use minutes from a pack. A pack is one payment with no subscription, and unused minutes are refunded within 14 days. See pricing.

Questions

What is an MP4 to transcript converter?

It takes an MP4 video, reads its audio track and writes the speech as text. On this page you add the file and the transcript appears in paragraphs that you can edit, copy or download.

How do I convert MP4 to text?

Drop the MP4 on the box at the top of this page and press the transcribe button. Your browser reads the audio track and sends it in short parts to be transcribed. The text appears as it comes in, and you can copy it or download it when it is done. The step-by-step guide has the details.

Is it free?

The first 5 minutes of up to 3 files a day are free, with no sign-up. The free result is plain text with a TXT download and a Copy text button. For longer files, buy a minute pack once; there is no subscription.

Is my video uploaded or kept?

The video itself is not uploaded. Your browser reads the audio track and sends it in parts of about a minute, and each part is discarded once it is transcribed. We do not keep the audio or the text on our servers. The speech recognition is done by ElevenLabs' Scribe v2 model, reached through fal.ai; the privacy policy says what that means for the audio. The transcript is saved only in this browser on your device, and you can delete it at any time.

Can I get timecodes or subtitles?

Yes. Timecodes are off by default. Turn on [HH:MM:SS] timecodes for free. With a pack you can also use HH:MM:SS.mmm or HH:MM:SS:FF frames, a start timecode and a timecode every 10 to 60 seconds. SRT and VTT subtitle files come with a pack.

Which files and languages work?

MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM, MP3, WAV, M4A and most other common audio and video formats work, up to 3 hours. The language is detected automatically. The speech model handles more than 90 languages, and English and other widely spoken languages work best. The transcript is written in the language that is spoken and is not translated.

How accurate is the text?

Every automatic transcript has mistakes, especially with noisy audio, overlapping speakers, names and numbers, and the model can occasionally add words that were not said during silence or music. Check anything you will quote against the recording. For court, medical or other records where accuracy matters, have a person review the transcript.

Does it label who is speaking?

Not automatically. You can click a sentence and type a name in front of it, such as "Interviewer:", before you copy or download the text.

Can I get my money back?

Yes. Unused minutes are refunded in full within 14 days of purchase, and minutes for parts that could not be transcribed are never charged. See the refund policy.
